From Orleans Cycle it is a 9 mile bike ride on the Rail Trail to the Wellfleet Trailhead at the South Wellfleet General Store on Lecount Hollow Road. You will be greatly rewarded if you get in line at the P.B Boulangerie for some of the tastiest baked goods this side of the Atlantic.
Just shy of the trail head at mile marker 21 approximately, the trail crosses the entrance to the Marconi Station & Beach. One of the most interesting landscapes you will see up close and personal. An observation platform at the Marconi Station site offers an excellent overview of the Outer Cape, including both ocean and bay.
The Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail is a 1-1/2 mile nature trail that descends gradually in elevation into the swampy environment that hosts Atlantic white cedar and red maple trees. The trail offers an excellent view of different plant communities, starting with heathlands, then stunted pitch pines and bear oak, taller pitch pines and black and white oaks, and finally the white cedar-red maple community.
The Marconi Area obtained its name from the famous Italian inventor, Marconi. From a site here, Marconi successfully completed
the first transatlantic wireless communication between the U.S. and England in 1903.
Swimmers and beach walkers feel a sense of solitude here because the sharp 40 foot sand cliff and ocean provide an unbroken,
pristine natural scene in all directions.
For more determined riders who want to continue their ride, the Rail Trail ends on Lecount Hollow Road where you may follow signs to the right and head up to Ocean View Drive where 2 miles of pristine ocean views draw you nearer to the world famous Wellfleet Beachcomber.
Take some time for dip in the ocean and a Goombay Smash at the 'Combah or continue north until Long Pond Road where you will turn left and find one of the cleanest kettle ponds to wash the salt off before you continue your ride into Wellfleet Center.
Stop for lunch at Pearl or grab a lobster roll at Mac's on the pier and spend some time watching the boats.
If you have the time, stay over night in Wellfleet and take some time to stroll through the endless galleries and shops and ride back the next day to truly make the most out of a 2 day rental.
