Be prepared for fun!
No matter how long you plan on biking, with a few simple preparations you can make the most of your time on the Rail Trail.
- Clothing: Depending on the weather, a pair of soft, breathable shorts or tight leggings will give you the best range of movement and keep you free from getting loose pant legs stuck in bike chains. Layers are great, you may go from chilly to sweating during the course of your ride so be ready with tank tops, tee-shirts, light windbreakers and don't forget your swim suit and towel if you want a dip in a pond or the ocean!
- Footwear: You can ride a bike in flip flops, but if you can wear sneakers you should, they don't fall off and they protect your toes from accidental road contact.
- Pack: Sunglasses, sunblock, bandanna, camera/cellphone, wallet, your keys...these things need to be carried some way, while we do offer baskets on some bikes for an additional charge, having a backpack is really handy and ensures you have everything you need.
- Hats: We strongly advise everyone to wear a helmet (under 16 its the law) . Baseball hats prevent the helmet from fitting properly, if you must have a barrier between your head and the helmet, a bandanna or a Buff type hat will work.
- Water bottles: We sell bottled water at the shop for $2 each, also our Orleans Cycle refillable water bottles can be purchased and make an awesome souvenir. Our rental bikes are all equipped with a bottle holder.
- Helpful tip : small, thin plastic type bottles (i.e. poland spring) do not fit the bottle holders, they bounce out and can be a hazard, if you bring water use a refillable bottle or choose a "sport top" bottle from the convenience store.
